PK Carsport heads to Zolder with a Corvette Z06PK Carsport is facing busy times. The Hasselt based outfit will be combining the seventh heat of the FIA GT Championship in Adria with the 24 Hours of Zolder. In the past PK Carsport already combined the FIA GT Championship with the Belcar series, but in 2004 the Belgian team wasn't fighting for the championship title in both series. The team's schedule is set and Anthony Kumpen also announced with which car they'll head to Zolder. Not a Ferrari nor a Lamborghini... but Kumpen-Longin-Hart-Mollekens will race with a ... Corvette Z06.
"The Corvette was a logical choice", says Anthony Kumpen. "It was impossible to find enough spare parts for a 24 hours race on such short notice. Normally that shouldn't impose a problem, but when something breaks down either during the free practice, qualifyings or the race... Furthermore, the mechanics would have to be able to fine tune a car without being able to rely on previous experiences. Those are the reasons why we are racing with our green Sporza-Corvette."
"The first few races weren't very easy for us with the Z06... but in the meantime the team solved the problems. SRO Belgium changed the technical regulations for the 24 Hours of Zolder, so now we can mount other brakes. We will also install extra cooling for the brakes. We estimate that we only have to change the discs twice. About our gearbox we aren't worried either. It's the same gearbox as we raced in our Viper two years ago."
Nevertheless the engine of the Corvette Z06 troubled the team in the beginning of the season: "We have known problems with the engine, but during the 24 Hours of Spa both Moslers finished the race. Their engines are comparable to ours. The base of the five and seven litre engines of the Mosler is the same as our Corvette's, so we are full of confidence!"
