Mollekens talks about the fire - Kumpen disappointed after double series of bad luck...

It looks as though the combination FIA GT - Belcar does not bring luck to the team of (GL)PK. Two years ago half the adventure ended in sadness. Longin went off the track in Zolder after coming into contact with a slower competitor. But in Oschersleben they clinched a splendid third place. PK Carsport was hoping to further build on this, but put everything on achieving a good result in the FIA GT championship.

Anthony Kumpen: "We concentrated fully on the FIA GT championship. For us it was two entirely split races. You could also see that from the programme. We only completed the compulsory laps. During the first 12 hours it would be Kurt and David and the rest would be for Bert and myself. Unfortunately it didn't turn out the way we wanted it to. Twice bad luck. In Adria we were rammed three times. Can you believe that? First Bertolini, followed by one of the BMS Astons and then finally by a Jet Alliance Aston. Then you hear that everything is running smoothly in Zolder, you finally arrive back at the circuit in Zolder...and the car catches fire."

Kurt Mollekens was at the wheel of the Corvette Z06 at that moment. He gives us a full explanation: "We were constantly lapping in 1:38". I was really in a good rhythm. Without that problem earlier in the race we would definitely have been fighting it out up front. But OK, back to the incident. I was travelling at a good pace in the direction of the Sacramentsheuvel. Here you reach between 160 and 170 km/hr. I noticed Duval flashing his lights...we had been driving together for a while so I found it rather abnormal that he should be signalling quite so intensely."

"I changed from second into fourth, because we no longer had third gear..... I looked behind me and saw an enormous sea of fire. The cockpit soon filled up with smoke... I knew there was a left hand bend coming up so I took my foot off the accelerator and steered the car to the left. At that moment I could hardly see anything, and the smoke was choking me. I went over the yellow kerbs and noticed that I was close to the wall on the grass. Safe enough to get out of the car. You obviously want to get out of a burning car as quickly as possible! A great pity that it had to end in this way ", Mollekens concluded.
